World Champs (30 Sept)

This is a rather belated blog on Worlds.

To say that I had a disappointing and frustrating World Champs, would be a gross understatement. I feel that my build up training was spot on, but unfortunately things didn’t come together for me on the day.

I started the race feeling confident and with good legs. I rode well, conserving energy, eating regularly and staying near all the main contenders. To my frustration, I felt my legs start to fade around 190km, just when the racing started in earnest.

With three laps to go, things were starting to split up, and the Italians started attacking. Up the climb on the way through the start/finish, I followed a hard attack, which unfortunately was brought back fairly quickly. After that I wasn’t feeling too good at all, and the next time up the steep climb, my legs failed me.

After downloading my power file, I was disappointed to see that my power output was well below what I have been doing during the last two weeks in the tour of Missouri and in training.

Subsequent to the race, I came down with some serious flue and had to take a week off the bike.
