Argus Power Stats

Ok - so here's what you have all been waiting for - 6 riders in various groups and their power over the critical durations and critical sections of the race. Performance in ACT is almost always dependent on 4 areas - Edinburgh Drive, Smits, Chappies & Suikerbossie. How well you manage these rollers will dictate your race success in combination with how well you hide the rest of the time...

There are some very interesting numbers here but I have to admit to being totally blown away with the power DG put out in that Giro bunch over Chappies & Suikerbossie 432w & 440w respectively at ~61kg - absolutely incredible and humbling. Read em and weep...

Pete, can you post the distances for the start & end of the Edinburgh, Smits & Chappies climbs. Are you using NP or AP? DG's number ARE VERY impressive!

Hi Gary - will look at the distances, but not really a big issue if a few metres difference here or there. I have posted NP for all durations of 5 mins or over.

Okay, so I wouldn't have been dropped by the Giro bunch going over Smits - I feel much better now!! Not!

Re the distances, can someone confirm that Edinburgh Dr starts at about 9.7km and is 2000m long. Then Smits is at about 47.5km?

Posted by Gary on 15 Mar 2007 at 04:29:PM
I have Ed Drive at around 9.7km in and 1100m long and then Smits at 47.5km in and 1700m long.

interesting to see DG's power numbers. I weigh slightly more than DG (65kg) and stuck it with the giro group the whole way, but in the bunch. Do you think there would be much diff in power numbers? - smits and chappies were 'easy' compared to suik

Well, firstly I would think that your power numbers are pretty good at present. DG put in a seriously hard effort at the start of little chappies(1 min @ 530w) that I can only surmise was somewhat diluted by the effect of the bunch for you not to "really" feel it. Suikerbossie was actually not harder (for him) than Chappies so I can only guess that you were fatigued by the effort on Chappies and so felt the effort more acutely on Suikerbossie (Chappies was 434w for 7.30 and Suikerbossie was 444w for 4.05) Well done by the way.

:) however I suppose the real difference in power (and weight) showed in the hillclimb tt where I lost two minutes on DG

Posted by ian mcclarty on 17 Mar 2007 at 02:23:PM
Well 2 mins ain't too bad - but you are right, no hiding in a hill climb TT. I reckon he must have been putting out 420+ for 12 odd minutes (considering he put out 434w for 7 mins after 80km on Chappies) I would be very interested to see how the top euro climbers would fare on that hill climb - my guess is that they would not get far under 12 mins.
