Queensland State Crit Champs - Race report

The 2008 Queensland State criterium titles were held at Nundah in windy conditions. This actually was a blessing for me because that meant a break away had more of a chance to succeed. That was my goal as there were some quick sprinters in the field with Australian Professional Jono Cantwell (Jittery Joe's) being the front runner. The 60 minute plus 3 lap race started at a relaxed pace for all of about 300 metres. From this point forward the race was pretty aggressive. I made sure I positioned myself close to the front so I would be ready to go with any moves. Being a solo rider against some well credentialed teams it was paramount. A break did get away after about 5 minutes which I missed. It was fairly big and it contained all the favourites. All I could do was conserve energy in the chasing bunch hoping that the break would be brought back in. Luckily for me it was a little too big to work and it was all back together again. Riders in one's and two's proceeded to hit off the front with not much avail.
There were about three off the front when I tried to break it up. This happened at about the 16th minute mark. Some strong riders came with me. About a lap later a couple more riders bridged up to form the successful break of 8 riders, which contained a rider from all the teams, with one team being represented with 3 riders. The pressure really wasn't let up and a couple of riders missing turns made it all the more difficult. Attacks started with about 15 minutes to go. I had a couple of goes to see how the others riders were feeling. I selected 3 riders that I was going to mark if they decided to attack. There was a flurry by the 3 riders I marked so I was having to do a fair bit of work. In the end no one was able to get away and it came down to the finish. I positioned myself behind the rider that I wanted to. The headwind down the back straight kept the pace down a little which suited me and when we swung onto the main straight (with a tail breeze) the riders on the front used a bit of energy to accelerate. I waited till the last moment and hit the pedals as hard as I could. I managed to find a gap and held off everyone for the win.
Quite a good result considering this race wasn't even a target (only signed up a week before), I didn't have any race fitness, I was up against some fit teams and had only been training for 4 weeks after about 1 and a half months off the bike. Analysis of my race data (PowerTap) showed that I was going pretty strong. I think Peter will explain that a little better.
A big thanks to Peter for getting me into shape pretty quickly with very little knowledge of me. A tall order in my books. One in which he passed with flying colours. Now to concentrate on the goal race in a couple of weeks.

A little insight into the power Chris made in this race -
NP 4.9w/kg for 1:12 mins
First 10 mins 5.6w/kg
Break power 4.8w for 51 mins
Max power 21.4wkg instigating the break...
Sprint power 17.1w/kg
Not a bad effort..
